In the original story, "Farewell to the Master", the robot's name was Gnut, not Gort.
In the original story, the robot, Gort, was the master - Klaatu was merely one of a series of doubles, or maybe clones, that died after a short time.

Goofs
In one scene near the end, the sound of an airplane approaching can be heard, then there is a cut to another angle and the sound is absent.

As pointed out in an earlier Goof, H.V. Kaltenborn refers to "the beautiful spring weather", while later on the tag on the suit Klaatu has "borrowed" shows the date 7-18-51. But Bobby at one point asks his mother if he has to go to school tomorrow, and later there's another reference to his being in school. Unless Bobby has been flunking out and is attending summer school, he would not be going to school in July.

Drew Pearson's desk doesn't have any pens on it when he starts his broadcast. There are two pens directly in front of him on the desk when the camera angle changes.

Bobby Benson: [indicating grave marker during a visit to Arlington] That's my father. He was killed at Anzio.

Reporter: I suppose you are just as scared as the rest of us. Klaatu: In a different way, perhaps. I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason.

Q
What is 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' about?
A
A flying saucer lands in Washington, D.C. carrying a humanlike spaceman named Klaatu (Michael Rennie) and a large and powerful robot named Gort. Moments after emerging from the spaceship, Klaatu is shot and wounded by a nervous US Army soldier. Gort begins to retaliate by vaporizing all of the army weaponry (guns, tanks, etc) at the landing site, until Klaatu stops him. Klaatu is taken to a nearby military hospital where he makes a rapid recovery. He tries to explain to one of the President's top aides that it is imperative he be allowed to address all of the nations of the Earth, but his request is declined. Rather than be detained at the hospital, Klaatu escapes and, under the name of Mr. Carpenter, he takes a room at a boarding house in the city where he befriends widow Helen Benson (Patricia Neal) and her young son Bobby (Billy Gray). With Bobby's help, Klaatu visits Professor Jacob Barnhardt (Sam Jaffe), one of the world's most eminent scientists. Klaatu explains to the professor that his mission is to deliver a warning and an ultimatum to the people of the Earth about their warlike ways and the misuse of atomic energy. Should his warning not be heeded, it will mean that the planet Earth and all of its inhabitants will be eliminated.
