'Karcharías' is the general name of the larger human-eating species of shark in modern demotic Greek, unchanged from ancient Greek, or in slang as in the English 'loan shark', a ruthless moneylender but in Greek it is applied without the 'loan' epithet as when applied to a person it is understood to mean a money lender who charges exorbitant interest and often uses rough necks to ensure payment.
