Trivia
Despite heavy promotion by MGM, this film was a critical and financial failure, most critics comparing it unfairly with Rex Ingram's 1921 silent classic, and Glenn Ford's Julio with that of Rudolph Valentino. Re-appraisals over the years have been rather more kind, and the film is now seen in a better light.

Vincente Minnelli did all he could to sign Alain Delon for the role of Julio, but the producers were set on having an American star in the lead.

According to Martin Gottfried in his biography of Angela Lansbury, "Balancing Act", she dubbed Ingrid Thulin's voice as a favor to her husband Peter Shaw, then an executive at MGM.

Goofs
Plane at the beginning of the movie changes from white to light green one. Also numbers on plane or the plane model don't match either.

In the scene where the German army parades through Paris (June 1940) they're marching under the Triumphal Arch and past the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (this is indicated in the scene's opening shot with the eternal flame on the tomb). In fact, the Germans refrained from marching through the Arch, as did de Gaulle and the Free French in 1944. The German HQ wanted to avoid stirring up revulsion and hatred, and no parade at all has marched there since the Unknown Soldier was put to rest in 1920. They have all passed beside the Arch (part of the symbolism of the Tomb is a wish for "no more wars").

When Karl is proposing a toast in honor of the family reunited at last (1h 01'), we can see Julio successively in the mirror and in close-up. In the mirror he has a glass in his left hand, but in close-ups the glass is in his right hand. The left-right hand images alternates three times.

4 Horses---Did They Wear Leotards?
A

When Denise Minnelli, wearing a flat bow atop her shoulder length bob appeared in her living room, her husbnd, Vincente, looked at her fondly ahd quipped, "Meet my Yugoslavian Eloise." Vincente tells me he put leotards on the four horses in "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" then gilded them with gold. The equines are on a treadmill and go thru fire, water, and hurricanes. . . .___________________________________
