Trivia
In the final scene, where the car nearly drives off the end of San Francisco's still-unfinished Embarcadero Freeway, the car was driven by stunt driver Guy Way. Way's wife was in the car with him; he had told her that he was just going to drive the car near the edge of the drop-off--which was about 100 feet--and then stop. What he didn't tell her was that he was actually supposed to accelerate to top speed then slam on the brakes in order to stop just inches from the precipice. Director Don Siegel in an interview recalled that when the shot was complete, Way's wife was so traumatized by the stunt that she had to be dragged from the car, kicking and screaming hysterically. In addition to the stunt, Way was briefly seen on film playing the cab driver who crashes on the Embarcadero at the beginning of the film.

The movie is actually a spin-off from a popular 1950's TV series. The Lineup (1954) ran on CBS from 1954 to 1960. It was a Dragnet (1951)-style "police procedural" drama, set in San Francisco, but filmed on Hollywood sound stages. Warner Anderson and Marshall Reed reprise their TV show roles in the movie, as Lt. Ben Guthrie and Inspector Fred Ascher. However, Tom Tully, who played Inspector Matt Grebb, Guthrie's partner on the TV show, was not available to make the movie. He was replaced by Emile Meyer as Inspector Al Quine.

The movie features a scene in the old Steinhardt Aquarium in Golden Gate Park. The aquarium (also featured in The Lady from Shanghai (1947)) was built in 1923. It was torn down in 2003, and replaced with a new, modern aquarium. An outdoor scene in the park shows the old De Young Museum, which was torn down in 2008 and replaced with a new museum.

When Dancer returns to the car after having the "mules" pointed out to him, he tells the wheel man to drive to "2090" Jackson, the Mark Hopkins and the Seaman's Club "in that order". Instead, the film shows the group driving to the Seaman's Club first, then 9020 Jackson and finally the Mark Hopkins.
