Frank Sinatra was interested in the role of The Pilot and had the producers of the film behind him but director Stanley Donen vetoed his casting.

Richard Burton was actively pursued for the role of the pilot. Burton had had a huge success, on Broadway, with Lerner & Lowe's "Camelot", but had turned down the film role (Camelot (1967)), as he did "The Little Prince".

Movie reviewer Stewart Klein of WNEW-TV in New York reviewed this film using only seven words: "The Little Prince is a big dog."

The little prince: It's not a matter of yes Prince to you is it?
