Director Derek Cianfrance claims that he would not have made the movie without Bradley Cooper cast as Avery Cross. In fact, he drove 5 hours to Toronto to meet with Cooper in person to convince him to take the role. Cianfrance says he did write the role for Cooper - "a guy who's paraded around as a hero but inside feels corrupted."

Ryan Gosling suggested Ben Mendelsohn for the role of Robin because of his role in the trucking film Prime Mover. Derek Cianfrance had only seen him in Animal Kingdom.

In the swimming pool scene, Avery is lit by diffuse skylight as he rests on the edge of the pool. After the last cut to Al, which lasts only a few seconds, Avery is lit by bright sunlight.

On the last car chase, the chasing officer (Avery) describes Luke's direction as heading west on Stanford. Luke then makes a left turn which would mean he would be heading south, but Avery says he is now heading north on Plymouth.

The beginning of the film takes place in the 1990s. The General Electric sign is shown with red and blue lights. During this time, however, white lights were the usual color of the General Electric sign. Since September 11, 2001, the lights have been red and blue for the majority of the year.

Q
What is the song heard in the trailer?
A
"Che" by Suicide is featured, as well as an original piece called "Snow Angel" by Mike Patton. The complete list of songs heard in the movie can be found here with their corresponding scene descriptions.
Q
What year(s) does the story take place?
A
Act I takes place over the course of approximately one year--since Luke was last in town one year before the film starts and conceived Luke at that time, Luke's son Jason is ~3 months old when the film starts, and when Avery is in therapy after the shooting, he discusses with his therapist that he and Luke both had sons that were one year old. Act III picks up the story 15 years later. Robin shows Jason a newspaper with Luke and Avery on the front page after the shooting, and the top banner reads "Preview '94." That suggests Acts I & II took place in 1993-94, while Act III takes place in 2009.
