The name of the Old Man given is Ely. This is also the name of the town in which Guy Pearce was born, in Cambridgeshire, England, although the pronunciation is different.

John Hillcoat first read the novel - and fell in love with it - before it was published.

Charlize Theron only appears in dreams and flashbacks, never in the present.

Midway through the movie the Man finds an unopened Coca-Cola can in a machine. When it falls out it has a dented top. When they drink from the can, there is no dent.

The pistol the man carries with the boy (supposedly the same from his home) is a small caliber revolver. The pistol that the man and woman 'talk' over and even show the last 2 bullets is a large caliber revolver. This is clearly visible in each situation when the barrel is visible.

When the Man is walking to the ocean pier through the amusement park where his leg gets shot by an arrow, the entrance sign to the park clearly says "Conneaut LAKE Park."

The Man: Everything depends on reaching the coast. I told you I would do whatever it takes.

The Man: You think I won't kill you? You're wrong.

The Man: The clocks stopped at one seventeen. There was a long shear of bright light, then a series of low concussions. I think it's October but I can't be sure. I haven't kept a calender for years. Each day is more gray than the one before. It is cold and growing colder as the world slowly dies. No animals have survived, and all the crops are long gone. Someday all the trees in the world will fall. The roads are peopled by refugees towing carts, and gangs carrying weapons, looking for fuel and food.
