As of February 2015, features two actors who appeared in the Middle Earth films, John Rhys-Davies (who plays the Elven king Eventine Elessedil) and Manu Bennett (who plays the Druid Allanon). Davies played Gimli in the Lord of the Rings trilogy while Bennett played Azog in the Hobbit films.

John Rhys-Davies plays the Elven king Eventine Ellessedil. Davies also played Gimli in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Tolkien's book heavily influenced Terry Brooks, author of the Shannara book series upon which the television series is based.

Jon Favreau was originally attached to direct the first episode, but due to scheduling conflicts, left the position. He will still serve as an executive producer.
