Trivia
The underwater scenes were all shot dry-for-wet, which greatly relieved Eva Mendes who doesn't know how to swim (at least at the time the movie was shot).

When the Spirit finds Sand Serif's derrière photocopy and says, "You shouldn't have signed it", the phrase was from one of Frank Miller's early Daredevil comics.
The name "Sand Serif" is a play on words. "Sans Serif" is a type of font without serifs. A serif is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol.

Goofs
The soles of The Spirit's signature Converse-style shoes switch back and forth between black and white. This is intentional and matches how Frank Miller would draw the shoes. When the bottoms are featured, they are white. Otherwise the shoes are black on black.

When young Denny and Sand run out of the rainstorm into the doorway, Denny's coat is not wet.

At the poker game, Sand is holding four cards, the four Aces. In the overhead shot a black three has appeared.

Q
What are huevos rancheros?
A
Huevos rancheros is a popular dish eaten for breakfast in Mexico. Basically it's composed of a couple of sunny side up eggs over a couple of corn tortillas with hot tomato or chili sauce poured over them, served with beans and cheese. The reason why the clones are called that is uncertain, possibly only for comical reasons as well as the Adios Amigos clones at the end.
Q
How much sex, violence, and profanity are in this movie?
A
For detailed information about the amounts and types of (a) sex and nudity, (b) violence and gore, (c) profanity, (d) alcohol, drugs, and smoking, and (e) frightening and intense scenes in this movie, consult the IMDb Parents Guide for this movie. The Parents Guide for The Spirit can be found here.
Q
Is "The Spirit" based on a book?
A
No. The Spirit is based on a 1940s newspaper strip of the same name by American comics writer Will Eisner [1917-2005]. It was adapted for the screen by comics artist and screenwriter Frank Miller, best known for his Sin City comics.
