According to the 'Variety Movie Guide', Audie Murphy " . . . gets into the army in 1942 at 18. In 1943, Murphy became a replacement in Company B, 15th Infantry Regiment, Third Division, 7th Army, in North Africa, and served with the unit throughout the war in Tunisia, Italy, France, Germany and Austria. During that time he rose from PFC to company commander, was wounded three times, personally killed 240 Germans, and was one of the only two soldiers left in the original company at the end of the war. His decorations total 24, from the Congressional Medal of Honor on down."

During Audie Murphy's Medal of Honor ceremony at the end of the movie, the narrator makes two mistakes as he describes the other decorations for valor that Murphy received: he mentions "a Bronze Star Medal" (Murphy actually received two BSM's); and "a Bronze Star Medal with bronze service arrowhead" (the correct award is the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Arrowhead). The narrator also omits two significant awards that Murphy earned: two Presidential Unit Citations and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

Quotes
Lt. Manning: At 0500 we'll open up with small arms fire. The 7th will move across at the same time. I'm sure the Jerries will throw some entertainment our way.

Kerrigan: [Observing the starving Italian orphans picking through garbagr cans] They picked a great time to be born, didn't they?

Kerrigan: [after a jumpy Murphy shoots at his own image in a mirror] Man, that's the first time I ever seen a Texan beat himself to the draw.

Q
How accurate is this film?
A
Everything which is pictured in the film actually occured and is recorded in Murphy's autobiography and verified by military records. However many scenes and characters are shown in the wrong sequence or fictionalized in order to shorten the film and present a clearer narrative for the viewer. For example in the film Murphy's first experience of combat is destroying an enemy machine-gun post in Sicily. This did happen in the Sicilian campaign almost exactly as it is portrayed in the film but Murphy's real first experience in combat was a soldier in his platoon being killed by a random shell as they marched towards the front. In real life the first enemy soldiers killed by Murphy were a pair of Italian officers attempting to flee on horseback. The conversation between Murphy and Kerrigan about how they will be treated when they return home does take place but on the front line in Italy rather than in a military hospital in France.
Q
What happened to Murphy afterwards?
A
Murphy became a film star in numerous westerns and rose to the rank of Major in the Texas National Guard. However he was plagued by the memories of his wartime experiences, suffering from what is today referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and became dependent on sleeping pills, keeping a loaded gun under his pillow. He used his fame to campaign for better treatment for soldiers suffering from the condition which was highly topical due to the Vietnam war. In later years Murphy would suffer financial problems and was killed in a plane crash in 1971.
