Although the series was still doing well in the Nielsen ratings, NBC canceled it at the end of the 1996-97 season, citing a desire for television shows designed to attract younger audiences.

Raymond Burr was the show's original host, hosting only the first episode, which aired as a special in January 1987. Afterwards, Karl Malden hosted the following two specials before Robert Stack permanently took over.

After hosting the 1987 specials, Raymond Burr and Karl Malden were both ruled out as potential permanent hosts because their salary requests were considered too high.
