Brandon Tartikoff wrote that when Valerie Harper left the show and the title was changed to "The Hogan Family", the staff privately called it "Throw Momma from the Series".

During the second season, series star Valerie Harper quit the series in a salary dispute. Her character was killed off, she was replaced by Sandy Duncan, and the series was renamed to "Valerie's Family". In 1988, it was renamed again to "The Hogan Family".
