Reportedly, Sylvester Stallone insisted that his character score the game-winning goal in the film, as he felt he was the biggest star in the film. The non-American crew was finally able to convince him of the absurdity of the goalkeeper scoring the winning goal, and the penalty shot was specifically written to placate his ego.

Q
Do the Allies win the soccer match or not?
A
'Officially,' the match ended in a 4-4 tie. However it was made clear that the referee was hand-picked to call the action in favor of the German team. The referee disallowing the first tying goal was one such call, a last-ditch attempt to keep the Allied team trailing. So the Allied players, the various Allied POW officers from various countries, and the French crowd watching the match, all considered it a 5-4 Allied victory.
