The picture's closing credits legal disclaimer reads: "The story of this film is inspired by events which took place in Kenya in 1940 and 1941. The film does not purport to be an accurate representation of either the characters concerned, or the events that took place".

The title of the film and its source novel by James Fox is a play on words and reference to Evelyn Waugh's unrelated earlier novel "Black Mischief" (1932) which has never been filmed. Released in the same year as White Mischief (1987) was the made-for-television Waugh adaptation Scoop (1987).

Goofs
The courtroom scenes include counsel shouting "Objection!" and the Judge replying "Sustained" or "Overruled" and occasionally ordering things "stricken from the record". These terms are routine in courts in the United States but are never heard in courts based on English jurisprudence, as was the case in colonial Kenya in 1941.
