When Paul Baumer and his classmates march into the barracks after their joining the German Army they are heard singing. This song is an English version of the WW1 (German) Patriotic song "Die Wacht am Rhein" The movie version of the lyrics, as performed in English, is not the correct one however.

Filmed largely in Czechoslovakia, one of the first US/UK productions to be shot in what was then a Communist Bloc country.

Goofs
When Paul Baumer returns home on leave, and hugs his sister, the straps of a modern bra can be seen showing through her blouse.

In the scene of Kaiser Wilhelm pinning medals on the soldiers, the battalion is at "Present Arms". In the very next scene, the battalion is at "Attention" (rifle butts resting on the ground), without the command "Order Arms" having been given.

The Kaiser is merely wearing the rank insignia of a Generalmajor (Major General) - plain shoulder cords for general officers. Wilhelm II. always wore the rank insignia of a Generalfeldmarschall (Field Marshal General), which were the shoulder cords for general officers with two crossed Field Marshal's batons, a crown, and the initials "WR" ("Wilhelminus Rex" = "King Wilhelm").

Muller: Himmelstoss...there's a latrine down the road. Why don't you go take a jump?

Paul Baumer: [to a dying Frenchman] If we threw away the guns, the grenades - we could have been brothers, but they never want us to know that.

Q
What are the differences between the European Theatrical Version and the Uncensored Version?
A
In several European countries, the movie was even shown in theatres however, for this release the producers trimmed the movie down and cut out roughly 25 minutes of footage. The German DVD as well as the Blu-Ray which was released recently include both versions of the movie. The missing footage is not of too much importance for the plot, however, every now and then shows more details about the characters that can come in handy (for example Paul's family situation and Katczinsky's motivations), or come across as being entertaining (for example the additional footage of Ian Holm as Himmelstoss). A detailed comparison between both versions with pictures can be found here.
