AYes. Although the names have been changed, the story is based on the 1974 murders of the DeFeo family in Amityville, Long Island, New York. The eldest son, 23-year old Ronald 'Butch' DeFeo, methodically shot his entire family, one by one, with a .35 caliber rifle. At his trial, Ronald pleaded guilty by reason of insanity and said he heard them plotting to kill him. He was found guilty on six counts of second-degree murder and is currently serving his sentence at the Green Haven Correctional Facility in Beekman, New York.
