Q
How is this game show played?
A
The host, Jeff Foxworthy, stands in the middle of the stage. Five kids (Kyle Collier, Alana Ethridge, Jacob Hays. Spencer Martin and Laura Marano (starting in "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?: (#1.11)," Laura Marano was replaced with Marki Ann Meyer because Laura Marano's schuled changed and was going to be starting on "Back to You")) who are in the fifth grade show up with backpacks and put their backpacks in their cubby holes and take their seats in elementary school desks with their names on the desks. Jeff Foxworthy then introduces the kids and then introduces the contestant, after the promo. After the contestant is introduced, the contestant is introduced to the subjects and the difficutly of the subjects. The contestant is also introduced to the US Dollar amounts the questions are worth: $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $10,000, $25,000, $50,000, $100,000, $175,000, $300,000, $500,000, and the bonus question $1,000,000. The contestant then gets to pick a kid and is told that the contestant can cheat off the kid by using their four cheats if they need to. The contestant may copy the answer that the kid wrote on his/her paper and then has to go with that answer; the contestant may peak at the answer that the kid wrote and then decide if he/she wants to go with that answer or choose a different answer; the contestant may answer the question and if the answer is wrong, hope that the kid wrote down the right answer and save the contestant; the contestant may decide not to answer the question and keep the money won up to that point. After two questions are answered, the kid goes back to his/her desk and the contestant picks a new kid to help him/her. When all cheats are used (minus the drop out), than no kid is called up to help and the contestant then has to go at it by himself/herself. If the contestant answers a question that is worth US $25,000 or below incorrectly, he/she will walk away with US $0 and will have to say to the camera, "I am not smarter than a 5th grader." After the US $25,000 question is answered correctly, any question that is valued above US $25,000 that is answered incorrectly, he/she will not get the valued money for that question but US $25,000 and will have to say to the camera, "I am not smarter than a 5th grader." If at anytime the contestant doesn't know the answer to a question, he/she can drop out and take what money he/she has won up to that point and will have to say to the camera, "I am not smarter than a 5th grader." After the tenth question is answered correctly, Jeff Foxworthy will ask the contestant if he/she wants to see the subject for the question that is worth US $1,000,000. If the contestant says that they do not want to see the subject, the contestant wins US $500,000 and will have to say to the camera, "I am not smarter than a 5th grader." The contestant then is asked if they want to see the question to see if they would have won the US $1,000,000. If the contestant says that they do want to see the subject, Jeff Foxworthy then shows the subject. The contestant then has the choice to either see the question at which point he/she will have to answer the question or may decide to keep the US $500,000. If the contestant decides not to see the question, he/she gets to keep the US $500,000 and will have to say to the camera, "I am not smarter than a 5th grader." The contestant is then asked if they want to see the question to see if he/she would have won US $1,000,000. If the contestant decides to see the question, he/she will have to answer the question. If the contestant answers the question wrong, the contestant walks away with US $25,000 and doesn't win the US $1,000,000 and will have to say to the camera, "I am not smarter than a 5th grader." If the contestant answers the question correctly, he/she wins US $1,000,000 and will have to say to the camera "I am smarter than a 5th grader." Then a new contestant comes out and the game starts all over again. On "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?: (#1.14)," instead of one contestant playing for a chance to win US $1,000,000, two contestants (a husband and a wife married to each other) will be playing the same game for US $1,000,000. Jeff Foxworthy allows the wife to switch places with the husband (who is in the audience) and take his place after he lost on the first question and walked away with US $0.On "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?: (#1.16)," instead of one contestant playing for a change to win US $1,000,000, two contestants (a brother and a brother who are twins to each other) will be playing the same game for US $1,000,000.
Q
Has anyone won the jackpot prize of US $1,000,000 and what was the question?
A
As of Thursday, September 06, 2007, not one contestant has ever won the jackpot prize of US $1,000,000. However, six contestants have made it to the US $1,000,000 level. Out of the six, five decided not to answer the question and one did decide to answer the question. Out of the five that decided not to answer the question, three would have gotten the answer right if the three of them had answered and the other three would have gotten the answer wrong. The one that choose to answer the question got the answer wrong. On Friday, September 5, 2008, contestant Kathy Cox, superintendent of Georgia public schools, became the first million dollar winner. The question was "Who was the longest reigning British monarch"? The answer: Queen Victoria (63 year reign). The half hour version of the show has fewer questions, one fewer fifth grade student and a top prize of $250,000.
