Almost all of the animals in the show are a combination of two animals. Appa is half bison, half manatee. Momo is half bat, half lemur.

During the opening credits, five silhouetted figures are shown demonstrating various bending styles. Four are identifiable as characters from the show: the Waterbender is Master Pakku of the northern water tribe; the Earthbender is Sud, Roku's earthbending teacher, he was also an early prototype character design for Toph but that plan was scrapped; the Firebender is Princess Azula; and the Avatar who demonstrates all four bending arts is Roku - the Avatar before Aang. Although all four were present in the opening credits since the first episode, they actually make their first appearances in episodes 18, 46, 12, and 7 respectively (although a statue of Roku is shown in episode 3 as well). The Airbender is the only model never identified with a character in the series or supplementary materials.

Goofs
The design of the white lotus tile changes through the course of the series. The first design is shown in the Book 1 episode "The Waterbending Scroll", when Iroh holds up the tile he finds in his sleeve. The second design is seen in the Book 2 episode "The Desert", when Iroh makes the first move in the game. (The old man that Iroh is playing against confirms it is the white lotus.) Then, in the Book 3 episode "Sokka's Master", the tile given to Sokka by the butler more closely resembles the first design.

Quotes
Katara: [opening narration] Water... Earth... Fire... Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he still has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.

Q
Is there really going to be a spin off?
A
Yes. Nickelodeon has announced that there will be a follow-up series called The Legend of Korra. "'The Legend of Korra' takes place 70 years after the events of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang -- a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra." Nickelodeon has ordered 26 episodes--so far. Quoting from The Wall Street Journal:Korra's quest eventually leads her to Republic City--the epicenter of the world of Avatar. A metropolis powered by steampunk-type technology, the city is inhabited by people from all nations. Korra finds that Republic City suffers from rampant crime and is also dealing with an anti-bender revolt. Korra is tutored by Aang's son, Tenzin, is the ways of airbending. The Legend of Korra will debut on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT) with back-to-back episodes. The regular timeslot for The Legend of Korra on Nickelodeon will be on Saturadays at 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT).
Q
Will Aang always be the last airbender?
A
No. 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the spin-off series titled The Legend of Korra reveals that there is at least one new airbender, Tenzin, the son of Aang and Katara. Tenzin is the airbending teacher to Korra, the new Avatar. His 3 children, Aang's grandchildren, are also Airbenders.
Q
Will there be a Book 4?
A
No, but there will be a follow-up comic-book series and a sequel set decades after the original show. The creators confirmed that at San Diego Comic Con in July, 2007. Other stories will be told in the Avatar world and there is the live-action movie, but the animated series ends with Book 3: Fire. The further adventures of Aang and his friends will be continued in an ongoing comic-book series to be published by Dark Horse Comics.Nickelodeon has announced that there will be a new series titled The Legend of Korra. 'The Legend of Korra' takes place 70 years after the events of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. Korra is tutored by Aang's son, Tenzin, in the ways of airbending; so, in a sense, 'The Legend of Korra' will be 'Book 4: Air', because the Avatar is learning airbending.
