The accompanying novel was written according to a pre-finalization version of the script, and differs in a number of ways from the completed movie. The most notable differences: Krekka operates a small crane in Vakama's workshop in the book, but in the movie, he only stands in one place. During the Kikanalo stampede, Vakama, Nokama, and Matau try to hide into a building that the Kikanalo smash through, but this scene is missing from the movie. Another sequence that was never animated is the "Troller" scene -- during which Turaga Lhikan, Onewa, Whenua, and Nuju take a ride inside the mouth of a hypnotized underground beast, and after they meet up with the other Toa, fight a flock of Lohrak. The defeat of Makuta is also described differently -- in the movie, he tries to grab Vakama, but he jumps away, so that Makuta grabs a huge rock instead that flattens him against a cliff; whereas in the book, Vakama sticks his disk launcher into a crack, Makuta attacks it, but cannot let go, so he pulls himself into the cliff with a huge smash.
