Trivia
Dennis Hopper directs Sean Penn in this movie without Hopper acting in it at all. Sean Penn would direct Dennis in "The Indian Runner" (1991), which Penn doesn't act in that film at all.
Critics complained that the scene showing the funeral being disrupted by gang gunfire was unrealistic. According to the filmmakers, shortly after the scene wrapped, a church service a short distance away actually was disrupted by gang gunfire.
At the end of the movie, when the gang members are partying in the hills, the police conduct a raid. One of the police cars is seen pulling into the area from the background and turns on it's overhead lights. It is then seen arriving from the background and turning them on again 2 seconds later.
During the chase of the female driver by police, she crashes head on into a car parked on the street, propped up on blocks, which brings her car to a full stop, but when they cut to a different angle her car is shown only side-swiping the park car and then she continues speeding down the road.
When Hodges takes a shot to his chest at the end of the movie, a bloody gunshot wound can be seen before he falls to the ground. But when McGavin crouches down to open Hodges' shirt to look at the wound, the shirt only has a tiny hole in it and no blood visible on the outside.
What are the differences between the Theaterical Version and the Extended UK Version?
A
In addition to the original theatrical version there exists also an extended version of the film, but just in the UK. This concerns the VHS edition of 4 Front Video and Virgin Vision. But the new scenes are not very satisfying, so the Standard Version is absolutely sufficient and recommended for everyone. In total the Extended Version runs approx. five and a half minutes longer than the Theatrical Version. A detailed comparison between both versions with pictures can be found here.
