Trivia
This is the first film that Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and Jude Law have worked together in since The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). However, Law doesn't have any scenes with either, and Damon and Paltrow barely share the screen together for a minute.

Steven Soderbergh and Scott Z. Burns were planning to follow up The Informant! (2009) with a biopic about controversial German director Leni Riefenstahl, but Soderbergh decided to abandon that project because it would have a very limited potential audience. The two men then came up with an idea for a suspense and drama look at a worldwide medical crisis, which they fine-tuned into this film.

A scene where Dr. Ally Hextall (Jennifer Ehle) injects herself with the vaccine was re-shot at the suggestion of consultant Dr. Ian Lipkin, because her scientist character was inappropriately shown injecting the needle through clothing.

Goofs
Right after Dr. Ellis Cheever announces that approximately 1 in 12 people will contract the disease, we see a montage of abandoned places from around the world. One of locations is a deserted office in what we would assume to be a deserted city. Unfortunately, several cars can be seen driving through the window on the right side of the office, depicting what one would see in a typical, bustling city.

When the 'virus structure' is explained by Dr. Cheever, just a protein structure is shown. What is termed as a receptor in green is just a phenylalanine (amino acid), only a small unit of a protein. Viruses have several proteins and proteins are built of amino acids, so what is shown can't be a virus at all.

At the end of the movie they are giving the vaccine which is an inhaled vaccine and telling the patients to breathe in through their nose. In reality, one should NOT breathe in while getting an intranasal vaccine as the attenuated virus must replicated in the warm nasal passage before spreading to the rest of the airways so your body can make antibodies against the virus.

Q
What is 'Contagion' about?
A
When an extremely virulent disease erupts in Hong Kong and begins to spread across the world, U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) agents, Doctors Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) and Erin Mears (Kate Winslet), and World Health Organization (WHO) epidemiologist Dr. Leonora Orantes (Marion Cotillard), struggle to identify the virus, contain it, and develop a vaccine against it while attempting to keep themselves from becoming infected. Freelance journalist and conspiracy theorist Alan Krumwiede (Jude Law) posts on his blog, which is read by millions of followers, that there is already a homeopathic cure called Forsythia but that the CDC is suppressing this information so that the drug companies can profit. Meanwhile, as the contagion spreads, societal order begins to break down as people start to panic.
Q
Where did Dr Orantes go after she learned the vaccines were placebos?
A
It is not shown in the film, but most viewers suspect that she ran off to call Sun Feng (Chin Han) or otherwise get in touch with him to tell him that the vaccines were fake. Presumably, she got to caring for the village children when she was being held hostage and didn't want them to be duped.

A Note Regarding Spoilers
