Trivia
In the prelude, the CNN reporter (played by former NBC correspondent Richard Valeriani) establishes his location as "Reporting live from the French aircraft carrier Foch in the Mediterranean Sea." The carrier's namesake, French General Ferdinand Foch, once notably commented, "Aviation is fine as a sport. But as an instrument of war, it is worthless."
When Lt. Cmdr Hunter is relieved of duty, Cpt.Ramsey says "Get Lt. Zimmer in here!" Hans Zimmer composed the films soundtrack and his name was added to the script to pay him honor.
During the galley fire the General Alarm would have been sounded and the crew would all have to don EAB's (Emergency Air Breathing) masks, yet none were worn.
The Rear Admiral from the briefing at the beginning and the Rear Admiral from the review board at the end have the exact same awards (ribbons) on their uniforms which is highly unlikely.
Capt. Ramsey: This is the captain. Set condition 1SQ for strategic missile launch. Spin up missiles one through five, and 20 through 24. The release of nuclear weapons has been authorized. This is not a drill.
