Production designer Rick Heinrichs designed Collinwood to reflect its maritime heritage (the mansion was close to the ocean, and its owners have a background in fishing); ocean motifs like fish and mermaids are present throughout the house and its furnishings, including seahorses in the fireplace along with statues of the sea god Neptune.
The opening scene takes place in October in Maine, yet the forest is full of ferns and the trees are in full bloom, with no dead leaves or fall colors visible.
When Victoria arrives at Collinswood, her first conversation with Willie indicates that she has applied for the governess job under the name Victoria Winters. An earlier scene shows that she didn't invent the name until earlier that same day, on the train en route to Maine.
