Trivia
When the police from around the world meet together at the Interpol meeting, most of the members there have a name tag with their names on it, and a flag to represent their country. It turns out that some of those name tags represent famous soccer players (real life players) from different countries, the name of the soccer player, being matched with the flag of the country which he is from.

When Naomi Misora's description is shown on the laptop at L's headquarters, you will notice that her description is made up of nothing but random letters strung together - something that the Japanese audience would have most likely glazed over.

Light Yagami and L are often represented as opposites, even to the point that Light uses a PC and L uses an Apple Macintosh.

Q
What does the apple in the opening theme symbolize?
A
The common belief is that the apple symbolizes the forbidden fruit, spoken of in the Bible. The apple also is a symbol of the death note. When Light used the death note, it was like he partook of the forbidden fruit. There are multiple references such as this one, to Christianity in Death Note.In an interview with the artist, he used an apple because it was a common object, but also very stark stylistically. He was asked directly about religious symbolism and denied it, as if the idea didn't occur to him. The interview can be found in one of the mangas but I don't remember which one.
