The movie was inspired by "The Devil's Platform" from the 1974 television series "Kolchak: The Night Stalker." However, producers could not get permission to continue the storyline and opted for a new one. Also, Tom Skerritt was in talks with Ridley Scott to do "Alien" and was unavailable for the movie, so producers offered the role to Richard Crenna.
