Trivia
The sandwich board that Bruce Willis wore while filming in Harlem was originally blank, rather than text, to ensure no one was offended by the racist message. The "I Hate Niggers" was added with CGI in post-production. Some television broadcasts use an alternate version where the sign reads "I hate everybody", which is sometimes erroneously said to be the original version of the sign used for filming, but this too was added with CGI in post-production.

Sean Connery was John McTiernan's very first choice for the role of Simon Gruber. He turned down the role, saying that he didn't want to play such a diabolical villain.

Eventhough this film's domestic box office is only about 100 million dollars, its massive international box office (which is about 266 million dollars) makes this film the "highest worldwide box office winner of 1995". This movie is perhaps one of the few movies (may be the only one) that could manage to become the "biggest worldwide box office winner of the year" when its domestic box office was not even in the top 5.

Goofs
When the mercenaries are gathered in the warehouse near the end with the trucks filled with gold bars, one of them opens a truck and bars spill out onto the ground. One of the bars is clearly an unpainted lead bar.

John McClane could have easily gotten killed during his first task (carrying the sandwich board with the racist remark through Harlem), but Simon needed McClane to stay alive until the explosion in the subway to gain access to the gold. If McClane would have died in Harlem, Simon could have told the police about the subway bomb anyway, but he couldn't have used his cover-up story (revenge for his dead brother) any longer without raising suspicion among the police. It contradicts his otherwise fool-proof plan.

Ricky Walsh is present during the meeting in the van with the FBI, sitting in the front passenger seat and would have a clear unobstructed view of the pictures of Peter Gruber and Mathias Targo in the FBI folder. So he could have easily identified Peter Gruber when he introduced himself as Bob Thompson from the City Engineer's Office. He also takes a good glance at Mathias Targo when he jumps on one of the trucks so he could have easily identified him as well.

Q
How did the riddle go with the seven wives?
A
In order to complete the last four digits of a phone number, McClane is given the following riddle: As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Every wife had seven sacks. In every sack was seven cats. Every cat had seven kittens. Kittens, cats, sacks and wives, how many were going to St. Ives? At first, McClane and Carver attempt to answer the question by multiplying 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 (or 7^4) = 2401, until they realize that only one person...the teller of the riddle...was going to St Ives, thus the phone number must end in 0001.
Q
What exactly were the steps in Simon's heist plot?
A
- Simon blows up a department store in order to get the attention of the Police and to show them he wasn't afraid to detonate.- Simon then sends McClane and Zeus Carver to play elaborate riddles that if failed, will cause "another big bang in a very public place."- One such assignment has McClane and Zeus heading to a payphone at a subway station across town, in New York traffic in a limited amount of time (making the trek impossible). McClane suspects something is amiss and sends Zeus to the payphone while McClane himself boards the train to look for the bomb.- Zeus answers the payphone but because McClane isn't with him, Simon says that this is considered non-compliance and the bomb will detonate. However, the bomb's trigger was on the train track and when the train struck it, it detonated. McClane found the bomb in time and threw it out the back of the train which caused a large explosion and crashed the train, however nobody was killed.- Simon then tells the police that he has stashed a massive amount of explosives in a school. He tells the police that they cannot evacuate but doesn't tell them they cannot search. This clears every police officer out of the Wall Street area.- The blast caused the alarms at the Federal Reserve Bank to go haywire. Some of Simon's men were sent in as alarm repairmen who disconnected the alarm.- Simon and some of his men pose as city engineers in order to get all their digging equipment into the subway.- Simon and his men then pose as foreign businessmen who enter the Federal Reserve Bank and dispatch all the guards in the lobby and head down to the vault.- Simon's men drill through the subway into the vault and start stealing all the Federal Reserve gold...some $140,000,000,000.00 worth.- Simon leads some of his men (mainly Targo) to believe they were loading the gold on a cargo ship only to blow it up. However, Simon switches the gold with scrap metal in order to keep the gold for themselves.
Q
What does the title mean, exactly?
A
The expression 'with a vengeance' isn't very well known with non-native English speakers. It means 'with intense motivation and/or in a violent manner'. Die Hard 2 had the subtitle 'Die Harder', to indicate that the challenge would be tougher than in the original movie. This third installment adds 'with a vengeance' to suggest an even more increased intensity. It also works in the literal sense, as vengeance, or revenge, plays a significant part in this movie's plot.
