Why the discrepancies between Text and Film?

There are many reasons why there are differences between the two different media. The Wizard of Earthsea is a series of novels that would not fit into a three hour film were every word read and each scene enacted. However, it is apparent that there has been a falling out between the original writer and the production of this film. Some of the changes seem to serve no purpose other than to antagonise.
