The Farmer's Market sequence was shot guerrilla style, with permits, but without extras. Most of the people are real shoppers, and many of them didn't notice that Frances McDormand and Jennifer Aniston were among them. However, members of the paparazzi still managed to slip in, trying to get shots of Aniston.
Nicole Holofcener wrote Catherine Keener's role especially for the actress, and gave the script to her before anyone else. Keener assisted in attracting other actors to the project.
To fulfill obligations with Frances McDormand's contract that she can't be away from her family beyond a certain time frame, the last week of filming was done in New York. These scenes include most of her scenes at home, plus the scene where Jane hits her head on a glass door.
When Jane and Aaron are in bed and he is commenting how dirty her hair is, Aaron's doesn't have his wedding ring on. A few seconds later, the ring is on his finger.
When Jane and Olivia start walking away from the orange stand at the farmer's market, a steadicam operator appears to fall into shot. It is a man with a large belt, plus what looks like camera equipment, visible on the right hand side of the scene.
When Olivia follows Mike into a restaurant, clearly visible behind her is a Grip/Gaffer Flag on a stand blocking light in front of the window. The flag is noticeable in two shots and disappears in one.
