The scene where Doug scores a goal with his butt, really happened. In 2000, minor league player Doug Mann scored a goal in overtime for the Columbus(GA) Cottonmouths of the Central Hockey League when the puck deflected off his butt, to send them to the Eastern Conference Finals.
The character of Doug Glatt plays for two teams in the movie: The Orangetown Assassins, who wear orange and black uniforms; and the Halifax Highlanders, whose logo is the letter H with a dot on the right side and wings on the left. Both are allusions to the NHL team Philadelphia Flyers, who have a similar logo and wore a similar style of uniforms in the past.
When the Highlanders' bus arrives in Quebec from Halifax, they should be traveling west or north, but the shadows of the signs show they are traveling east.
After the Steelers score a goal in Glatt's first game in Halifax, you can see the scoreboard over center ice during the next face-off. The score is displayed as 0-0. Also, there is only one second off the play clock (it displays 19:59) although the game has been underway for some time.
Rod McCaudry: [after a horrendous rendition of the national anthem]
Well that was borderline treasonous, and a disgrace to our nation and its proud and storied history. My father didn't kick the Nazis'... and the puck drops!
The film is inspired by the book, Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey Into a Minor Hockey League, about Doug Smith, a late bloomer, who didn't start playing hockey until age 19 and came equipped with the unlikely skill of an amateur boxer.
