According to director Allison Anders (on her commentary sound track for the DVD) it was a first for a movie to show a woman's waters breaking (in the recording studio scene - however such an event had already been depicted as early as Cinderella Liberty (1973)) as well as having her sweater getting wet because it was time to breastfeed her baby. Allison Anders had also asked for "child care" to be listed in the end credits.

In what would have been her film debut, Amy Ryan played a character married to Eric Stoltz in the second part of the film, but was cut from the final edit of the film.

Q
Is it true that Grace of my Heart was based on the life and career of Carole King?
A
Although there are many similarities between "Natural Woman" the Carole King Autobiography, and the movie Grace of my Heart, it is claimed that no such comparison should be made. If one purchases the book however, the similarities are rather spooky.
Q
Is it true that Grace of my Heart was based on the life and career of Carole King?
A
Although for licensing, Grace of My Heart is considered a work of fiction, the image of Carole King cannot be removed from the movie goer's mind. The music and characters of a specific era and place are reflected with such precise detail, that one would have to be 10 years old, or lived in a jail cell for the last 50 years not to be able to place them all. And they are all here, from Carole King herself, to Gerry Goffin, Surfboards and even John Tuturro's stint as an amazing Phil Spectre character. Although they may not have worked together, all were part and parcel of the time and event that we call Rock & Roll.
