In the trophy cupboard, to the right of the Quidditch trophy, you can see the "Service to the School" trophy with part of "Tom M. Riddle" engraved on it; the trophy and the name on it are confirmed by Ron in a deleted scene from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).

The Wizard's chess-set Harry and Ron were playing in the Great Hall is based on the Lewis Chessmen, which date from the 12th Century. They were found in 1831 on a beach on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. In all, 93 pieces were recovered, with 11 now residing at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and 82 at the British Museum in London.

Owls are very quiet in flight. They have to be, they are hunters and rely on being able approach their prey silently and hear where that prey is in the first place. The owls in Harry Potter - especially in the scene where hundreds of them gather outside the Dursleys' house in Privet Drive - are very loud. Every time they appear, the soundtrack contains loud flapping noises which sounds more like some sort of pigeon than any owl.

Although moving and talking portraits are a hallmark of the Harry Potter universe, not all wizarding portraits are like this. We see many ordinary, non-moving portraits at Hogwarts throughout the film.

Q
What are the differences between the Theatrical version and the Ultimate Edition?
A
Just recently an Ultimate Edition of the first Harry Potter movie was released on DVD/Blu-ray. This new edition features an extended cut of the movie, that aired on ABC during the channel's Harry Potter special. For this new cut the deleted scenes, that can be found on the older DVD versions, were reinserted into the movie. In total one can find about 6 1/2 minutes of "new" footage. A detailed comparison between both versions with pictures can be found here.

Q
Why were the Dursleys so mean to Harry?
A
Petunia Dursley disliked her sister Lily (Harry's mom) because, as a witch, Lily earned the family's admiration and attention. It is revealed in one of the books that Petunia had requested to join Hogwarts, going as far as to write a letter personally to Albus Dumbledore, only to be refused. She grew jealous. Then Lily married James Potter, and their son Harry was born a wizard. When Lily and James were killed and Harry came to live with the Dursleys, Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon considered him to be a freak, and so they treated him accordingly.
