Trivia
Joel McCrea was initially cast as the lead, but declined the role because he didn't want to work again with Veronica Lake, his co-star in Sullivan's Travels (1941).

Veronica Lake and Fredric March did not like one another, due in part to some disparaging remarks March made about her. During filming, Lake delighted in playing pranks on March. In one scene in which the two were photographed only from the waist up, Lake stuck her foot in March's groin. In another incident, Lake hid a 40-pound weight under her costume when March had to carry her in his arms. After that incident, March nicknamed the film "I Married a Bitch."

Goofs
The film opens with a scene of Puritans in the Massachusetts colony burning witches. No-one was ever burned for witchcraft in America. The accused witches of Salem, Massachusetts, and its environs were hanged, with the exception of Giles Corey, who was pressed to death with rocks. Burning was the European method of executing witches, and pop culture has long confused the two historical spheres.

The movie is set in Massachusetts but at the 15:00 minute mark, as they arrive at the hotel fire, we see a fire department car with the seal of the City of Los Angeles on the door.

Q
How old is Jennifer?
A
Jennifer claims to be 290 years old but, since she's been imprisoned in the oak tree for 270 years, she still looks like she's 20.
Q
Is 'I Married a Witch' based on a book?
A
Yes. I Married a Witch is based on The Passionate Witch, a novel begun by American fiction writer James Thorne Smith, Jr [1892-1932], finished by Norman H. Matson, and published posthumously in 1941. The novel was adapted for the movie by American screenwriter Robert Pirosh and American playwright Marc Connelly. It is rumored (but unconfirmed) that I Married a Witch, along with the 1958 movie Bell Book and Candle, provided the inspiration for the popular TV series 'Bewitched' (1964-1972).
Q
What is 'I Married a Witch' about?
A
Back in 1672, when people still believed in witches, Jonathan Wooley (Fredric March) denounced Jennifer (Veronica Lake) as a witch. Just before she and her father Daniel (Cecil Kellaway) were burned as witches, Jennifer cursed Wooley and all of his descendents such that they are doomed always to be unhappy in love and to marry the wrong people. Jennifer and Daniel's ashes were then buried under an oak tree in order to prevent them from ever escaping their graves. Two hundred and seventy (270) years later, lightning splits the oak tree in half, releasing Jennifer and her father. Jennifer sets out to torment Jonathan Wooley's descendent, Wallace Wooley (also played by Fredric March), who is running for governor and about to be married to the ill-tempered Estelle Masterson (Susan Hayward), whose father (Robert Warwick) is one of Wallace Wooley's chief political backers.
