Just before the courtroom scene, Lucia dramatically and tearfully denounces Mike's and his lawyer's attempts to trick her and steal the boy, to which Gable's character remarks sarcastically, "I forgot, who won the Academy Award this year?" In fact, Sophia would become the first foreign actress to win an Oscar (Best Actress) for a foreign-language film, Two Women (1960, It.) the following year.

This was the last movie Clark Gable made that was released during his lifetime. The 33-year age difference between him and Sophia Loren was blamed for the film's poor performance. There was in fact some surprise that he had accepted the part, since at a press conference while filming But Not for Me (1959) he had announced that he was no longer going to play romantic leads.

The plot was devised for a British film project, intended to star Gracie Fields (a well-known real-life Capri resident). When financing could not be raised, the storyline was sold to Paramount, and then elaborately re-written so that the Fields character became an American man, played by Clark Gable.

When Nando and Mike are watching the parade together, there are different people around them depending upon whether it is a close or long shot.

Mike and Lucia order up stiff drinks for each other at the bar. Mike orders a bourbon drink for Lucia and she orders a Campari based drink for Mike. However when each of them grabs the bottle of liquor to top off the others drink the bottles are switched. Mike's gets topped off with Burbon and Lucia's with Campari.

When Lucia is on the bed waiting for Michael, she wears a blue dress and dark nylon stockings. When she is outside with her nephew Nando, she is still in her blue dress, but bare legged, and when she enters the house and lies on the bed, she is wearing the dress and stockings again.
