Trivia
There is another Jules Verne novel entitled "The Golden Volcano", which - although is set in the Canadian Arctic during the gold rush - spews gold nuggets when it erupts. This is likely where the mountains of gold came from for this movie.
The original Jules Verne story "A Journey to the Centre of the Earth" (1864), on which the preceding movie Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) is loosely based, never had a sequel. However, another Jules Verne story "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), did have a sequel, called "The Mysterious Island", which was released in 1874 and followed five American men stranded on an island in the South Pacific, which is similar to a plot point in this movie.
Brendan Fraser, who starred in the first film in this series Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), also starred in The Mummy Returns (2001) opposite Dwayne Johnson, who here takes over the position of Sean's father-figure.
When Gabato is piloting the helicopter to the island, his hands are in the incorrect position. The cyclic control (stick) would be controlled by the right hand and the collective would be controlled by the left. Gabato is backwards.
When Kailani approaches Hank and Sean's house after escaping the island, she is supposed to be in Ohio. However, there is a palm tree clearly visible behind her.
While parked on the dock there is a divider between the pilot and passenger area in the interior of the helicopter. Later during the interior shot on the way to Mysterious Island the divider is gone.

Q
Is this a sequel?
A
It is considered a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) as the character of Sean Anderson is in both films, but the story is completely different with a whole new adventure so you don't have to see the first one to understand this one.
Q
Is there a Daffy Duck cartoon that's playing with this movie?
A
Yes. A short called "Daffy's Rhapsody" is shown along with the movie in theaters. It takes the 1950 Capitol Record song "The Daffy Duck Rhapsody", sung by legendary Mel Blanc, and puts animation to it. Coincidentally, the short is falling on Daffy Duck's 75th anniversary, as the character debuted in 1937.
