Michael Curtiz was asked to direct this movie by Hal B. Wallis. At first Curtiz refused, but soon took the job. It has later been told that Curtiz did watch a few of Elvis' earlier movies (story doesn't tell what movie) and after that accepted the job.

Throughout most of the scene near the end of the film, in which the injured Danny recovers consciousness in Ronnie's cabin, his slashed arm is seen to be tightly bandaged - presumably Ronnie's first-aid handiwork. However, in one shot, the bandages are hanging loosely from his arm.

In the beginning of the movie there is a scene where people on the street sing a song. In one part a woman is singing on the song, but the picture shows a male singer.

Mr. Fisher: Look, son! You know you didn't fail because your marks were bad, Mr. Evans said you failed because of your attitude. He said anybody that disagreed with you got a punch in the mouth. Is that what I brought you up to do, to fight?
