AAs Ridley Scott explains in the introduction to the Director's Cut, he was disappointed with the Theatrical Cut of the film. In order to appeal to a broader audience, the studio ordered the removal of about 50 minutes of material, including the entire subplot of Sibylla's son. This material was restored for the Director's Cut. A detailed comparison between both versions can be found here and a list of altered and additional scenes can be found here.
