The first scene in the film shows Andrzej and Krystyna driving a car. As shooting from the platform in front of the car was not yet available, the crew was tied to the car, standing on its mask. To get the proper light effects, they held a blanket with a small hole for the camera. Leon Niemczyk (Andrzej) was really driving this car quite fast (this was crucial to this scene), but he couldn't see anything. He drove the car using the tops of the trees to imagine where the road is.

The first Polish film to be nominated for a Foreign Language Oscar.

Co-screenwriter Jerzy Skolimowski also was interested in playing the young hitchhiker's part.

When the young boy is trying to stabilize the Christine by hanging off its side, you can see the railing of the camera boat in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

After Young Boy takes out his knife to offer it to Krystyna, to cut the radishes he gave her, and then leans back to play the knife game with his hand, as he leans back the head of a light haired fourth person can be seen sticking up from the cabin behind him. This is presumably a crew member but the person is fairly unidentifiable due to the briefness of the shot and the angle of the persons head.

Throughout most of the movie, they were shown driving a Peugeot sedan. But when the couple first got back from sailing, with the young guy no longer present, they were in a Mercedes sedan until the very end of the movie, when the couple were once again in the Peugeot.

Krystyna: You've drowned a boy.

Andrzej: You don't whistle on board.

Young Boy: [after kissing Kyrstyna] I'm sorry.
