The only cast member to be in both this film and its companion piece, Flags of Our Fathers (2006), appears in the flamethrowing image of Chuck Lindberg (played by Alessandro Mastrobuono). He advances on a bunker with a flamethrower. Individual members of the casts of both films have met, though never officially presented together, as there are commonalities between the casts in the acting community.

The story of Lt. Ito strapping mines to himself and lying among corpses to attack a tank is based on the real-life story of Satoru Omagiri, as told in "The Rising Sun" by John Toland.

Goofs
In the tunnel battle to defend Mt Suribachi, when the Japanese soldier looks up the cave opening and is about to get set alight by the Marine's flamethrower, it is clearly visible that the uniform has been wetted with the fireproof grease, but a few moments before that, his uniform was completely dry.

The world map seen in the Japanese command center on Iwo Jima does not demarcate the then British colony of Newfoundland, including it a part of Canada instead. Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949.

A
The following FAQ entries may contain spoilers. Only the biggest ones (if any) will be covered with spoiler tags. Spoiler tags have been used sparingly in order to make the page more readable.
Q
Was "Letters from Iwo Jima" actually filmed on Iwo Jima?
A
It was filmed mostly in Barstow and Bakersfield in California. A skeleton crew was allowed only one day to make on-location shots on Iwo Jima, and that was only after being given special permission from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, because more than 10,000 missing Japanese soldiers still rest under the soil.
