Trivia
The film deviates from Marcus Luttrell's account of the decision to release the goatherds. In his book of the same name, Luttrell describes Lt. Murphy favoring release of the prisoners but placing the decision up to a vote, with himself and Murphy favoring release, Axelson in favor of killing the prisoners, and Dietz abstaining. Luttrell's account was controversial, as military procedure requires the officer in charge to give legal orders, and Murphy's father objected to the notion that his son would abdicate his responsibility. In the film, the mens' respective opinions are reflected according to Luttrell's version of events, but Murphy is depicted as decidedly telling the others "This is not a vote" before giving the order to release the prisoners.

Though it is not mentioned in the movie, Marcus Luttrell was personally awarded the Navy Cross by then-President George W. Bush. Lieutenant Michael Murphy would be awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. Axelson and Dietz were also awarded the Navy Cross posthumously.

Marcus Luttrell's Navy Seal team were armed with the SIG-Sauer P226 Navy and the Heckler and Koch HK45C, not the Beretta as shown in the movie. The correct gun can be seen in the who's who pictures in the credits.

Q
What does the writing on the SEAL's uniform mean?
A
The SEAL's have their blood groups written on their uniforms in case they are hit. They also have NKA which stands for 'No Known Allergies'.
Q
How much ammo do the Seals carry on a mission?
A
A typical load would be six thirty-round magazines plus a couple of hundred rounds of link ammo and three 15-round magazines for their pistols. They would also carry hand grenades and rounds for the underslung grenade launchers on their rifles. Marcus said in his book that the guys would usually carry eight thirty round mags for their rifles. However, each had an uneasy feeling and took three extra mags. So that would be 330 rounds of 5.56 each.
Q
What is "SEAL" ?
A
A "SEAL" is a member of the elite, versatile commando force of the United States Navy. US Navy SEALS are trained to conduct long range reconnaissance missions, hostage rescue, ambushes, and other, similar missions. The name "SEAL" is an acronym, and stands for "Sea, Air, and Land". This acronym refers to the ability of US Navy SEALS to infiltrate their targets from the sea, the air and the land. SEALS have access to a wide variety of weapons and equipment in order to accomplish said missions. The training required to become a US Navy SEAL is notoriously brutal, and is considered to be the most difficult kind of training in the United States military. The training lasts roughly a year, and roughly seventy percent of those who start the training fail to complete it.
