According to his book "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor", Bruce Campbell mentioned that McHale's crew were rarely given specific instructions in many scenes other than to follow Tom Arnold around. He and French Stewart were not given any direction at all for their sequence in the talent show, so they scripted out a vaudeville act using Naval and nautical terms all by themselves. Despite this, most of their sequence ended up playing in the background while the camera focused on Arnold and Debra Messing.
A few of the characters mention Capt. Wallace B. Binghampton having sunk The Love Boat. The original Joseph 'Happy' Haines played by Gavin MacLeod later went on, after filming 'McHale's Navy', to play the role of Captain Merrill Stubing in the TV The Love Boat (1977).
McHale wears a cap showing the "USS Alaska" in the final chase scene. The USS Alaska has been several ships. During WWII the Alaska was a heavy cruiser. At the time of the movie it is an Ohio class ballistic missile submarine commissioned in 1986 and currently in service.
In the Medal Ceremony at the end of the movie, Lt. Penelope Carpenter uniform is incorrect, in fact, does not exist in its shown form. She would be wearing a dress shirt with a black tie with full sided decorations
Virgil:
Well, it seems that my stuntmen have arrived. I'd better go... rehearse.
