The scene with the submerged plane in the river was based on a real life experience the director had in North Queensland. While on a tourist crocodile watching tour he witnessed a crocodile playing with a bloated, dead pig around the boat.

In the scene when the guerrilla is retelling his experience with one of the monsters and explains how it was over 100m tall, he is actually talking about an encounter a relative had with a UFO.

The film was shot using prosumer level recording equipment, with an on set crew of only seven people: director and camera operator Gareth Edwards, sound operator Ian Maclagan, line producer Jim Spencer, production manager Verity Oswin, a driver, and the two stars (dating each other at the time, now a real-life married couple) Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able. Because they were such a small crew using so simple equipment, the entire production team could fit into one van.

Goofs

When the two characters arrive at the deserted town on the US side of the border, and the camera pans the town and focuses on the evacuation side, you can see a pickup truck driving down the road. (This is likely the result of using open sets for filming, which allowed for the shooting areas local population to be accidentally captured in a shot.)

Where can I find a picture of the aliens?

They look like octopuses only 200 ft tall with pink bioluminesence. A scene from the movie depicting the creatures is shown here. More like 20 feet tall than 200 according to this picture though. More photos can be seen here, here, and here.

What happens at the end?

A

Although you see the 'Monsters' mate and the two protagonists kiss then the closing credits, the beginning of the film is chronologically the end. At the start of Monsters the movie shortly after the extra terrestrials attack the convoy, we see the military opening fire on the aliens and we see Samantha laying on the ground. Whether she is dead or unconscious is not clear. We then see Andrew drag her to safety and is screaming for help. We over-hear the military on the radio saying they would call in an airstrike that would be less damaging to the area than carpet-bombing. We then see a quick cut of Andrew running away from the scene carrying the limp body of Samantha in his arms. Then we see the point of view of what appears to be a tomahawk missile heading straight towards the alien. Then the title of the film appears.
