Trivia
The ship used in the film was also used in Treasure Island (1990).

The MGM built vessel was to be burned at the conclusion of the movie, as the historical ship had been: Marlon Brando said if they burned the ship he would not finish the film. A 40-foot model Bounty was constructed and burned instead.

Marlon Brando's notorious on-set antics reached a pinnacle on this film. According to Peter Manso's Brando biography, Brando had so much clout by this point that he got MGM to green-light virtually every outrageous idea he had. At one point, he pulled people off the film crew to decorate and design a friend's wedding in Tahiti. Another time he had airplanes filled with cases of champagne, turkeys and hams flown to Tahiti for parties.

Goofs
After being set adrift, Captain Bligh and his men went to the island of Tafua to resupply their provisions of food and water. It was after their incident with the cannibal natives that they decided not to land again until reaching Kupang. In the film, Bligh never went to Tafua, deciding to plan the course directly for Kupang (or Timor, according to him).

Capt. Bligh is portrayed as an older man. During the real voyage, Bligh was only in his thirties.

Francis Drake is reported as the man who brought potatoes to the Old World, but they were actually carried by the Spanish after the conquest of Peru.

Quotes
court-martial judge: Your methods, so far as this court can discern, show what we shall cautiously term an excess of zeal. We cannot condemn zeal. We cannot rebuke an officer who has administered discipline according to the articles of war but the articles are fallible, as any articles are bound to be. No code can cover all contingencies. We cannot put justice aboard our ships in books. Justice and decency are carried in the heart of the captain, or they be not aboard. It is for this reason that the Admiralty has always sought to appoint its officers from the ranks of gentlemen. The court regrets to note that the appointment of Captain William Bligh was, in that respect, a failure. Is this interesting? Interesting? Captain Bligh: Midshipmen - be a dull navy without them. Now get that slut off my ship.

Fletcher Christian: You're in prison now, Mills. With one slight difference. We're not locked in. We're locked out.

Q
What is keelhauling?
A
Keelhauling is a medieval form of punishment where a convicted sailor's arms were tied to long ropes, and he was tossed off the bow into the water. Sailors on either side of the deck used the ends of the ropes to 'haul' his body under the ship's keel, either from one side of the ship to the other or down the length of the ship (from bow to stern). If the sailor was not ripped to shreds by the barnacles encrusting the ship's hull, he most certainly drowned. In the case of this movie, he got eaten by a shark.
Q
What is 'Mutiny on the Bounty' about?
A
Taking his first command in 1787 as Captain of the British merchant ship the HMS Bounty, William Bligh (Trevor Howard) sets sail from England to Tahiti to obtain breadfruit plants and transport them to British Jamaica where they will be grown to supply plantation slaves with an easy-to-grow, cheap, and nutritious food plant. During the journey, Bligh becomes so abusive to the crew that Leftenant Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando) sees no alternative but to mutiny against the captain and take over control of the Bounty.
Q
How does the movie end?
A
Maimiti and Christian are awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of crackling fire on the Bounty. In attempting to save the sextant, Christian is severely burned. He is returned to shore where he is covered with a blanket and given laudanum. Mills (Richard Harris) apologizes for Christian's 'bad luck' at getting burned, explaining that he only burned the Bounty because the men were afraid that Christian might force them to go back to England. With Miamiti at his side, Christian dies. The final scene is of the burning Bounty as it collapses and sinks into the bay.
