Trivia
The camp in this movie is not a P.O.W. camp because the inmates are not prisoners of war. It is an internment camp, where civilians are kept for no other reason than being of the wrong nationality. This happened, for instance, to Japanese civilians in the U.S.

In the book, 'Bruce Beresford: Instincts of the Heart', author Peter Coleman says Beresford asked his uncle about World War II: "I asked him about the treatment of Japanese prisoners. He said: 'We used to shoot the lot of them.' 'But that's dreadful!' I said. 'You weren't there, you wouldn't know,' he answered and he is a pleasant, educated, rational man. I was shocked, but it did give me an insight."

This is the second war movie directed by Bruce Beresford. His first was Breaker Morant (1980).

Goofs
Given that each of the women wore a single dress, day in and day out, in a tropical climate for three years straight, the fabric of their clothing would have disintegrated long before that was finally depicted in the film. Also, there's no way that the nuns would have been able to keep the white elements of their habits white, especially given the scarcity of soap.

An early night scene of the women swimming ashore (set in the week after 10 February 1942) shows the full moon. The moon was between last quarter and new moon that week.

Title Card: Allied soldiers did not arrive in Belalau, the most remote internment camp in Sumatra, for a further two weeks. The women and children were taken to Singapore and Jakarta for medical treatment. They then returned to their homelands. The vocal orchestra performed over thirty works in 1943 and 1944. It ceased when half its members died, and the remainder were too weak to continue. Title Card: The music in this film was performed from the original scores, which survived the war. Lifelong friendships endured among the survivors of the camps, many of whom are alive today. Their reminiscences provided the inspiration for this film. 1 of 1 found this interesting Interesting?
