Near the end of the film, there is a massive cavalry charge by the rebels. According to James Belushi (who plays Doctor Rock in this film) director Oliver Stone forfeited his $25,000 paycheck to pay for the scene with the horses.

At the 1987 Academy Awards, Oliver Stone had two pictures in contention, this movie and Platoon (1986). This film had two nominations, the other had eight, giving Stone a combined total of ten nominations from two movies, both war films and both with one word titles. Salvador (1986) failed to win any Oscars, but Platoon (1986) took home four including Best Picture.

Goofs
When the young man is executed while Belushi and Woods are in the armored personnel carrier, the gun is obviously pointed over the man's head.

The position of the gun in the red-shirted man's hand changes from lowered to 90 degrees with his body.

Boyle refers to rebels possessing Belgian FLNs. He probably means FALs.

Q
What was the legacy of the conflict?
A
Out of a population of only 5 million it is estimated that up to 80,000 people were killed or simply disappeared and a further million driven from their homes as refugees. A later 'Commission for Truth in El Salvador' concluded that the government was guilty of huge repression and human rights violations including sponsoring paramilitary death squads. However it further stated that the FMLN were also guilty of human rights violations including kidapping, bombings, rape and murder. Afterwards the El Salvadoran parliament passed an amnesty law covering all violent acts in the war. Today El Salvador is universally recognised as a free and democratic society with one of the most prosperous economies in Latin America. However it suffers one of the highest murder rates in the world although of a purely criminal nature rather than having any political dimension.
Q
What happened afterwards?
A
With the end of the Cold War, suspension of military aid from the USSR to Cuba and subsequent removal of the Sandinstas from power in Nicuragua foreign support of the El Slavadoran communist rebels evaporated. In 1992 a peace accord was signed restoring a democratic civilian government, disarming the rebels and granting amnesty to the armed forces for their actions during the war.
Q
What eventually happened to Rick Boyle?
A
