The battle of Iwo Jima involved the USMC, the US Navy (for transport and gun fire, as well as corpsman), the Army, and the Army-Aircorps, and the USCG, all branches were involved in the battle.
Even with considerable assistance from the U.S. Marine Corps the film went considerably over the original budget ($1 million) and when completed had cost nearly $1.4 million, making it the most expensive movie Republic Pictures had made up to that time.
In the training montage near the beginning, troops are seen in helmet liners with M1903 rifles contrary to the camouflaged helmets and M1 rifles originally shown. Poor editing.
