Christian Bale didn't have any interest in playing the part of the villain as he had just finished making American Psycho (2000). But he was reading through lines with Toni Collette who has the part of the witness in the film one day, and decided to give it a go as another villain after all.

Goofs
During the gunfight in front of Diane's house, one of Peoples' thugs is seen firing a nickel-plated Beretta pistol at Shaft. The thug pulls the trigger numerous times, but the slide clearly locks back after the first shot, indicating that the gun is empty.

After a trash can thrown at Shaft breaks a car window, you can see smoke from the explosion that was used to really break the window.

When Peoples' brother is shot in the head, blood sprays on the back window. But after Peoples is run over and gets back into the car, his brother is still there yet there is no blood whatsoever on the window.
