Trivia
The music cues for the climactic ride that Shane takes to the showdown are from an earlier Paramount film, Rope of Sand (1949).

Alan Ladd was only 5'6", and this had to be compensated for. When he is in scenes with Van Heflin the two are about the same height, although Heflin was far taller. When Ladd is shown with Jean Arthur he is perhaps a bit taller than she. When Heflin is shown with her, Heflin is far taller than she.

Jean Arthur was over 50 years old when she played Marian Starrett - she was, in fact, ten years older than Emile Meyer, who plays grizzled old cattle baron Rufus Ryker.

Goofs
Prior to Shane and Joes fight, Shane flips the saddle bag up on his horse to tighten the saddle. The shot goes to a quick shot of Little Joey, then back to Shane. The saddle bag is back down and Shane is tightening the bridle on the front of the horse.

When Shane is talking with Ryker, before Shane shoots Wilson there is dirt on little Joe's forehead. When Little Joe is talking to Shane at the end the dirt is gone.

When Stonewall leaves Ernie's place after the latter has decided to leave, we see Stonewall riding away. Before the end of the shot, when Stonewall is about 50 yards away from Ernie's place, the soundtrack continues with Stonewall wishing him good luck, sounding as if he were still right in front of Ernie.

Q
In what time period is 'Shane' set?
A
The first page of the novel begins: 'He rode into our valley in the summer of '89, a slim man, dressed in black. Call me Shane, he said. He never told us more.' To give some perspective to the year 1889 in the Old West, the day of gunfighters was coming to an end. The American Civil War had ended almost 25 years earlier (in 1865). In 1876, General Custer was killed at Little Bighorn, Wild Bill Hickok was shot, and Geronimo surrendered to the U.S. Army. Billy the Kid and the Gunfight at the OK Corral both happened in 1881, and Doc Holliday died in 1887. Barbed wire, which marked the beginning of the end for open range ranching, was patented in 1874. As Shane said at the end of the movie to Ryker, "your days are over".
