Trivia
When Kane's says that he sailed with Admiral Drake, he's referring to the poem "The One Black Stain" by creator Robert E. Howard. In the poem Kane speaks out against Drake's execution of Sir Thomas Doughty in 1578 Patagonia, South America, hence why Kane says "That didn't end well."
During filming, James Purefoy accidentally received a deep cut to his forehead which required stitches. For some close-ups, these stitches had to be digitally erased.
The young woman Kane sets out to save is named Meredith. This was a Welsh surname, but when used as a given name (often as a patronymic) it was given to males. It didn't become a female given name until nearly 300 years after the time period of this film, and then mostly in the US.
The ship shown crossing in front of the burning city in the beginning of the film belongs to a type who appeared much later. The plain bow design, the lack of square sprit-sail, the jibs and the aft marconi sail are features typical of a nineteen century or later ship.
There's a scene in the movie where we see some people burning corpses and there are two guys wearing black and beaky masks. What are those?
A
They were burning corpses of people that died from the plague. These guys in black are doctors. Those masks are primitive breathing masks used by the doctors during the Renaissance era to prevent getting the plague themselves. They would stuff the beak with dried flowers and herbs to cover or block bad smells. Black was the common color used by doctors at that time, like white is today.
