When the game was still new and popular, rumors persisted that Luigi and Wario were in the game. These rumors have long been proven false, although those character did appear in the later port, Super Mario 64 DS. Many falsely state that the rumor included Waluigi, but that character didn't even exist when the game was originally released.

With sales of 11 million units it was the best selling Nintendo 64 game and the best selling 5th generation console game ever.

After dropping into the first Bowser stage, he calls you "Friend". This is a reference to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996), when Bowser was Mario's ally.
