Mario's Tanooki suit is based on Tanuki, a fox spirit in Japanese mythology which is known to change shapes and turn into statues.

The short tune played when using one of the hidden Warp Whistles is the same tune used in Nintendo's _Legend of Zelda, The (1986) (VG)_ when using that game's Whistle, which performed a similar function.
